Hawaii Fare War Breaking Out and I Love These Bump Stories Here is a Profitable Double

Yesterday United fired a salvo of low fares good through the end of their schedule from Houston(CO hub), Salt Lake City(DL hub), Dallas (AA hub)and Minneapolis (NW hub) to Honolulu. So they have stepped on everybody's toes and you can expect retaliation within the next 48 hours. Look for fares to drop from United hubs and maybe others will join in the game.

The fare being offered is about $235 round trip on United with a 3 day minimum. Watch in the next 48 hours for your city to come into play.

UPDATE Today at 8AM Eastern Time

United has added Atlanta and Newark to the available cities. These are Fantastic Prices for your trip to Hawaii. Check 3 day minimum stay for fares from the above cities allthe way through the end of the schedule. Use the flexible dates button on the United website.

Book you ticket to Hawaii NOW.

PS: Still no reply from the competition?? Come on American, Delta, Continental and US Airways. Come play the game with United and open up more cities.

Reader Bump Success Story

It makes my day when one of you wins in the bump game. Here is a particularly nice story with a "moral to the story"

Rick,

I think you’ll appreciate this…

Last Friday I read about your good fortune of a double-bump (and the resulting double vouchers!) while you were on a mileage run. It’s been a while since I’ve completed any mileage runs---most of my flying is restricted to business and pleasure travel (though I can remember doing many trips between SAN and JFK for the miles) and so the opportunities for accepting a bump are few and far between. I had just finished a week-long business trip in Dallas and was flying out of DFW that morning, so I was hoping for the opportunity of a bump and a voucher. As it happened, 24 hours earlier there had been a very large and ugly storm that blew through DFW, resulting in a large number of canceled flights and many stranded passengers---the perfect recipe for a bump opportunity! (Sounds like The Perfect Storm to me.)

I was on a flight from DFW to OGG (continuing on to HNL) and because of the storm, there were approximately 45 people standing by for my flight to OGG. AA announced they were looking for volunteers and since I was going home, I was in no hurry and accepted the bump and a $500 voucher; they re-routed me thru LAX, arriving in HNL (my final destination) at 930 that same night.

But wait, the story gets better...

The foul weather had also canceled several flights to LAX and so there were a large number (150+) of people standing by trying to get to LAX. AA took one of their international 777's at DFW and did a quick flight to LAX to help get some of the people on their way. I was lucky enough to get seat 9A, a bulkhead (international) business class seat! The short 3 hr flight was very comfortable, though it only had the domestic service (or lack of).

When I arrived at LAX, I found out they needed a volunteer on my flight to HNL and so I offered my seat. At the last minute, they decided they didn't need my seat and upgraded me to FC (no big deal as this was a 757---just like flying in a bus). Just as they were about to close the door, a connecting (& confirmed) passenger showed up, and so they were back on the horn asking for a volunteer. I offered my seat and AA gave me another voucher---this time $800---and put me up overnight at the LAX Hilton! So now I have $1300 in vouchers and am planning my next trip to Europe.

Life is good!

Hope you have recovered from your RTW Adventure; that’s on my list of things to do.

Aloha,
John

Thanks John

The moral of the story is: "there is more than overbooking that can lead to a bump" Look and ask everytime you fly. Weather and cancelled flights. Mechanicals and cancelled flights all screw up loads and give you opportunities. Even the President flying into your airport can disrupt the schedules and lead to opportunities.

I always try to have a flexible schedule.

Get to the gate 1 hour and fifteen minutes before flight departure. The first volunteer is sometimes all they need.

Know the potential routings to get you on your way and help the agent rebook you.

Travel with carry on only whenever possible.

Think of travel day as a travel day. Try to leave your schedule open.

I'm sure John is happy with his $1300 earnings while flying home.

Next time it could be you
